Just yesterday at the Google I/O 2014 Developer's Conference, Sundar Pichai announced that attendees would receive a free Moto 360 smartwatch, and their choice of a free LG G Watch or Samsung Gear Live to go with it. As if two smartwatches weren't enough, Pichai also announced another freebie gift for attendees.
At first, it seems glance you wouldn't be faulted if you thought the gift was a cheap toy, but in actuality it is meant to be a low-cost VR Headset made out of cardboard. Okay, so maybe it really is a cheap toy, but that doesn't mean it isn't a clever invention. Those clever Google engineers figured out a way to use a cardboard cutout with some lenses built in to allow you to use your own Android smartphone as a VR headset conversion.
It turns out this "device" was designed was developed by a Googler as a “20 Percent” project (for those who don't know, Google allows employees to devote 20% of their time on a side-project). The whole point of this project was to offer a low-cost alternative to the usually expensive VR headsets slowly filtering onto the market.
