Welcome to the forum!
It's not listed under accounts, its listed under contacts. Either open up your contacts app from your app drawer or open up contacts through your dialer. Then go into settings and then import/export. You'll see import from Google there.

Thanks but my app drawer has got an app called people rather than contacts.
From people's settings, I can see import/export but there is no Google in
the list to import from. I can only see Sim card, phone contact, SD card
and phone storage.
The phone also picks contacts from Yahoo, Twitter, LinkedIn, BBM, What's
App but it can't find Google.
What could be the problem here?

When you open People and tap menu, what's listed under Contacts To Display? Do you see your Google account there?

Are you signed into Google Services on your phone? When you activated the phone and it asked for your G Mail account, did you enter the one the Contacts are associated with?

Yes it did ask ask for a gmail account, I have just one gmail account so I activated it on the phone. I have used the Play store to download app and my gmail syncs. The only problem is that my contacts are invinsible and do not sync.

I export my contacts from the one phone using Astro file manager so the contacts are not on the M8. The problem not is that new contacts can not be saved in my Google contacts since sync with contacts does not work.
How do I fix that?

Do you have a PC to log into? If so log into your G Mail account and select Contacts. Are they visible there? It sounds like you may not have any contacts in your Google account? If not, there is an Import option on the Contacts page on-line and if you have them saved to a file you should be able to Import them. Maybe then they will sync with your phone.

That's baffling then....if you can see them there...they should automatically sync to the People app on the phone with the same Google account. I am stumped!

The only other thing I can think of is clearing the app data and trying again. Go to Settings > Apps or Manage Apps > All apps (if that's an option) > Open Contacts (or People... Its named Contacts on my list) and then select Clear Data. Do the same for Contact Storage of that is there too. Then reboot the phone. After that open People and see if your Google account is listed under Contacts To Display / sync.

This happens occasionally after an update to the device. .. when they upgrade the framework. Sorry to say you need to factory wipe and start again.
