Going to Canada, way to make calls

Hello All-

I have a Droid 1 and I am going to Canada from the US in a week and would like to keep in touch with my wife via phone. I noticed that calls are .69 a minute, so I was trying to find a way around that.

Before I go, I am going to sign up for the unlimited overseas data package, so I can still use the internet and email on my phone.

What program would I be able to install to bypass the .69 a minute? I was thinking, maybe skype or google voice?

She has a Droid 1 as well if that helps.

i'm not sure about that...i think the verizon skype allows you to use 3G, but you may have to call them to make sure...

My wife and I were in Montreal in September. Prior to our trip, I called VZW. I was told that since we were only going to be in Canada less than a week not to change plans. Additionally, we were told that text messaging would not incur any extra fees.

While in Canada, the only time I had data was in our hotel or at a location that had wifi.

We both made calls and sent text messages. Interestingly, neither of us were charged any additional fees.
