Froyo Update - First Impressions

I haven't seen this forced lock thing so many people are mentioning. I downloaded my 2.2 at around 8:00 EST this morning and installed it after the download finished. Prior to the install, I had a password lock setup on my phone...but after the install, the password lock was gone...it was just the regular swipe lock. So I had to re-set my password lock.

There were 2 app updates available right off the bat, the Gmail app of course and Dropbox. But I couldn't get the Dropbox downloaded at first. After a couple hours, it downloaded and installed...probably a server overload initially. I then went and grabbed Flash and apps2sd. Next: Chrome2phone on my PC.

I am VERY pleased now that all my contacts download to my car stereo via Bluetooth! Before the update, I had updated the Bluetooth firmware on the stereo and it would only download a handful of contacts from the phone. Now with 2.2, all the contacts have been grabbed.

I'm content. Haven't seen any ill effects yet.

Much improved, faster, app draw is much smoother, page scrolling is smoother, louder, flash, slide to unlock is much smoother. Just much better overall. I almost can't believe the poster who said it's worse than 2.1, I see nothing but a better worked device. I like that the slide puts it into vibrate, much better for me anyway.

But the question is, can you remove the swipe lock like you could on 2.1 and only have your password lock?

Likes
- Seems faster, smoother.
- Better battery info and app use detail
- It finally capitalizes my "I"s automatically when I type them!
- Quick option on slide lock to set to vibrate instead of just silent.
- Flash is cool!

Dislikes
- The exchange forced lock/pin issue really made me mad at first. The solution (company webmail > options > mobile devices > delete the profiles) made no sense, but I'm really happy someone had posted it.
- Exchange email notifications dont seem as reliable on 2.2 as they were on 2.1. But I just restarted the phone and pulled battery and it SEEMS to be working better now. A restart was probably a good diea after the upgrade anyways.
- I don't get a notification light for meeting planners anymore. Pretty sure it used to light up with those. Just makes the sound now. Still trying to figure out if there's a setting I have not found.

just dont update... its not a push, you have to pull it in.

Using widget locker for my lock swipe, but seems with 2.2 it will not replace the default one. I too would like to know if anyone figured out a way around this.

Man I'm glad I didn't go back to 2.1 and then do the official update. I'm running the leaked version of 2.2 and I'm not experiencing any of these problems. I'd have to say from what everyone is saying, that the leaked 2.2 is actually better. Plus I'm running the fly x rom with no bloatware so it runs smoothly and quick. And i got the 928 black glass theme to work with this rom so my phone looks sick as hell as well. Keep on dealing the info. This will help me with my final judgement of whether to go to the official update or not.

So far I've been a fan, the cosmetic changes really havent affected me much, niether have the ability to use flash on pages.

A couple things I have noticed, was

1. the installation of VZ navigator. I dont want this, and dont need it, but so far I've been unable to uninstall it using the applications manager

2. It seems like more of my apps are running on thier own, I noticed it when going into advanced task killer, apps would be running that I didnt start. This didnt happen before the update.

So far I have no complaints. The new voice search commands are awesome, as well as it seems to have fixed the GPS issues where your phone would not sleep.

The vs navigator is part of the bloatware, like Google talk, Skype etc. The only way to get rid of that is to install a rom without that bloatware. Bloatware also runs in the background usually all the time, this is what also effect your phones processing speed in a way as well.

vibrate

Yes silent mode is still there.
But he means instead of swiping your finger to the left at the first lock screen to go straight to silent, what it does is puts the phone in vibrate only mode rather than full silence.

I guess that would be a reason to show semi-dislike but that's all based on preference I guess.

When you go down on the volume, before this it had a vibrate and then silent mode...now goes straight to silent I guess?

Can someone PLEASE tell me if we have a pattern lock on the phone, can the regular swipe to the left on the lock screen be removed so I dont have to unlock my phone TWICE. Cause it's so annoying, I'd rather just go back to 2.1

I noticed this with the Droid 2 and Droid 1. Once it got the upgrade, they took away the vibrate feature. It's the worst part about the update in my opinion. I HATED IT. They need to bring it back .

I have definitely noticed speed improvements my apps don't hang anymore. Google voice used to hang a lot.

One problem is my reception in my dorm room is a lot worse now. I rarley get 3g in my room now.

Overall, better. Probably because I didn't know how to do it any better, it took me a LONG time to get the phone set up again. First had constant sync issue with titanium backup, so I had to put in all of my data and settings by hand after another reset.
The battery usage thing is still force closing, but I don't use it anyway. WiFi issues had corrected themselves last week, so hopefully 2.2 won't mess with that. Faster/ smoother? sometimes yes and sometimes no.
overall, I'm glad I flashed back to 2.1 and updated to the OTA....well now that I'm rooted again and can use all of my apps.

I was using the OTA leak and reverted to install this and this is just FAR SUPERIOR in almost every way so far from the leaked 2.2 or from 2.1.

I just wish this poll wasn't posted so quickly. In a days time, can you honestly give a good assessment of an OS?

Just my 2 cents worth, I don't have the X but 2.2 worked great on my D1 and is working great on my D2 as well.
