when i first got my moto droid a few weeks ago, id get a force close once in a while when i was quickly switching back and forth b/w programs and probably just driving the OS nuts. lately, its been happenening more and more often and with out me even doing anything at times. for instance, it just forced closed on me mid-call when i was searching around for a bank's PIN number i stored in a memo app. it force closed the phone app i guess, cause the call had ended. and earlier today when i went to make a call, the screen was frozen. nothing would unfreeze it, and about 15 seconds later, the device rebooted. this has happened probably 3-4 times since i bought it. whats going on here? i better not have a defective device cause i just sent my damn rebate in!

This is usually caused by an app that you installed. If you have anti-virus, remove it. That's one of the biggest culprits. Depending on who you talk to, task killers are the next (I'm in that camp). I'd start removing Marketplace apps one at a time, most recent first, until the problem resolves. If that doesn't work, you can do a factory reset, which will set your Droid back to 'out of the box' condition. Please keep us informed.

damn, ive installed sooo many apps. are their any known to cause this? i dont have any antivirus, but i do have ATK. the thing is though, that was the first app i ever had (verizon salesman installed it saying its "essential"). and since this really wasnt an issue in the beginning, i assume then that it wouldnt be because of ATK. are there certain types of apps that would be more likely to cause issues? i recently downloaded a porn player lol, i know porn on the PC is often problematic, but i dont know if that necessarily carries over to android :p

Task Killers and Home Replacements have been the biggest culprit of FCs for me

Unfortunately, this trial and error is the best way to diagnose and solve this problem. Sometimes it's not one app causing the issue, but two or more apps that don't play well together. Not to add another app to the mix but, get listables (makes a list of your installed apps) and post the list here. Maybe someone will see and app or combination that caused them grief.
