Everytime an OTA update comes out for my phone that starts the waiting game. Most OTA updates are rolled out in batches which means that you may not actually get the update to your phone for the first several days. In those cases you can wait on someone to pull the update file from the OTA and upload it to the web. Once you have that file you can flash it in recovery and avoid having to wait for the update to roll out to your device.
Once the file is actually uploaded to the web you have to find it. The new Twitter account @AndroidOTALink seeks to make finding these files much easier. As soon as the file is available for download they simply tweet out a link. So far they have tweeted out an update for both the 6p and the 5x.
