Folder name beginning with . has no pictures.

I had my pictures saved to a folder. I renamed the folder placing a "." in front of the name. Now my folder is empty.

Can anyone explain this or tell me how to fix it?

Help greatly appreciated.

The pictures do still show up in gallery, but when I click a specific one the picture will be replaced with a gray screen.

In other words, I can only see the thumbnail correctly.
