I'm not 100% sure that this is the first independent benchmark of the Cortex A9 but it is the first I could find and appears to be in line with the expected IPC gain of ~25%.
By pixel counting, the A9 at 1ghz on Android 2.2 appears to be 31% faster than a Nexus 1 (2.2) on the quadrant benchmark. Now Quadrant only runs on one core (not verified but I'm quite sure) so the dual core A9 handsets should be much faster in multi-threaded apps.
