Extended Battery

I'm not getting anywhere near that bad battery life - not even close. I take the phone off battery at about 5:45 am, and at 11 pm if I haven't had it on power at all (such as when driving - I'll generally plug in while I am driving) it's at about 50% - sometimes around 40%, sometimes around 60%. I don't talk all that much, but a good 20-30 texts a day. I use gmail for mail (two accounts), so that's all push. Screen on in a 17 hour day is about 2.5 to 3 hours. I have Tweetdeck set to check for updates every 15 minutes. I hit the browser a few times a day.

I never listen to music - that's what the iPod is for.

In settings->accounts I only signed up for the Google accounts and a Picasa account - which I may drop anyway. I'm set to performance mode in the battery settings.

There is something weird with either your phone, the apps that you run, or some combination. It certainly doesn't match what I see. (This phone definitely has better battery life than my Eris did.)

Well, today's test was with running NO apps at ALL.
Telephone conversations, some texts, and boom - from 90% to 50% in just about 2 hours.
This is a replacement phone and replacement (brand new) battery.
My 3 biggest needs are talk, email and sms.
It's a shame because I know someone who's grandfathered in an old plan with verizon where they can get email not data or web just email, and it only costs them like $5 a month.
Either way, if I cannot get a full refund from the store I got this from, then I'll have to get something that is rated with amazing battery life, and I dont give a crap about features.
Then I'll sell this toy on ebay.

TBH this sounds like a phone or battery specific issue, and you didn't answer one of my questions.

I would get another replacement if I were you. There is nothing wrong with the phone in the big picture.

That is the latest firmware as well.

well i don,t know what ur problem with ur phone is but i stream movies from netflix (about an hour worth a day) play games (at least an hour) and have three email accounts with about 30 emails a day comming in and sending 30 texts a day spending a couple hours of web time and a couple hours of talk time and i use fb app and a few other apps for my work and use gps and from unplug at 5am to get back home from work about 5 pm i still average about 30 to 40 % left with extended battery

Well, yesterday morning, I went to the original vendor where I bought it (Costco), but they refused exchange because Verizon had already exchanged it for me, and therefore it was not the original unit.
I found a Verizon store nearby, and they sold me an extended battery (gave me a 25% discount).
Now, the battery is getting VERY good longevity.

Are you using the bigger battery cover with your extended battery, or did you just put it under the stock battery cover?

Just curious. Im looking to pick up an extended battery but dont wanna use the bigger cover....this phone is already pretty thick :icon_eek:

The extended comes with a new cover, but it is barely bigger. It is very very slight difference. Personally, I wouldn't mind one much bigger if it made the battery last like 4x as long :)
But it isn't really much of a difference, you hardly notice it. However, I think you do need to use the new one, because otherwise you stress the joints that keep it in place.
My experience now is MUCH MUCH better. I used it all day today, it's now 7:40 PM and I have about 40% remaining! A world of a difference.

Final analysis: the stock battery would get me down to 15% by around 5:00 PM under best conditions, even less earlier with extensive talk time.
Yesterday I used very extensive talk time, and at 10:00 PM I had 30% remaining.
That's what I expect from any phone out of the box. Absurd that I needed to buy an extended battery, but then again, that's marketing.

Battery life problems? On this phone?!?!

Your battery life claims are ridiculous, the droid 3 has the second highest call time of any mainstream smartphone (Second to the atrix at 10.89 hours), it sounds like you are talking on the phone WITH THE SCREEN ON?!? (while playing games, lol) If you truly aren't running a lot of background apps, you have extremely bad luck with defective batteries. I'm glad you were able to become happy with the device with your extended battery. It truly is a fast device, with duel 1 ghz processors (and a couple other cpus for when its in standby, etc) and they do take a toll, if you underclock them using something like setcpu, you can extend your battery life A TON (but you need root), but you won't get the blazing fast lag-free droid 3 experience. You can also customize your CPU clock settings to your battery level to ensure it lasts through the day. But for phone calls to be running down your battery, you must be doing it wrong. Motorola beats everyone in the calling battery life department. I can regularly get 10 hours of talk time out of my droid 3 with the stock battery, with an aftermarket 3500 mAh battery, you can't possibly drain it using it for "office stuff", GPS Navigation will kill your battery fast though. Even with an extended battery. Also as others have said, 3G data kills the battery too, wifi is much more power efficient. 4 vs 8 hours of web browsing from 100% to dead, stock battery. Anandtech has some cool battery life graphs with the droid 3 against other phones in their detailed review here, for things like talk time, wifi browsing, 3g browsing, etc: AnandTech - Motorola Droid 3 Review - Third Time's a Charm

Might be a little late to chime in, but I'm using the stock battery and getting much more time off the charger than I ever did with my D2G (also using the stock battery).

I work a lot of overnights. If I unplug at about 12:45am, use my phone on break and intermittantly to check messages and email (my data sync is always on), go home at noon and use my phone for web browsing and more of the same, I'm left with about 50-60% by 6pm. I don't spend a lot of time talking, but I do listen to music. Listening to music for a little over an hour brings my battery down by about 10%.

I'm not sure about this, but I THINK that our phones show a 10% decrease in battery life as soon as it's depleted by 1%. Motorola phones are designed to show battery depletion in 10% increments. I may be wrong here, but I think a drop of even 1% from 100% or any multiple of 10 below it will show up as a full 10% loss. I might look into that.

I'm not looking at my battery usage stats right now, but the biggest user is almost always the same. Historically, the display has been my biggest battery consumer, even with SuperDim keeping brightness down as far as I can tolerate. All things considered, though, I'm not disappointed.

If you're implying that I am lying or exaggerating in any way, I have nothing to respond with. There's no sense in replying to such a claim. I did not come on this forum, asking for help and advice, with false claims. That would be a colossal waste of my time.

If you're suggesting that the experience is ridiculous, I agree. Since the extended battery has been installed, it has been exceptionally good. I have no explanation as to why my experience was so terrible with two consecutive stock batteries, but maybe my standards are higher, or maybe it is just a really unfortunate coincidence that I got two bad batteries. Or, who knows.
But my problem is solved, and I think the extended battery is what should ship with this device, given the type of CPU it has.

This is the first time I use an Extended Battery; but it keeps saying Invalid Battery please use original Motorola Battery.

My bionic still powers on but I can't charge the Extended Battery. How do I fix this?

Some quick questions to help solve this.

What version of Gingerbread do you have/ 5.5.886, 5.5.893 or 5.9.902? You can find that by going to Menu>Settings>About phone. It'll be under "System Version."

1) Are you rooted?

2) I presume this is the Motorola Extended Battery, but there are extended batteries from Mugen and Seidio. What do you have and and where did you get it?

3) If you're unrooted and this is the Motorola Extended Battery, I suggest taking it to a Verizon store and see what they say. It's possible you have a bad battery.
