exchange user name format

I am unable to get my exchange to work on my phone. It finds the exchange just find but I get an error authentication failed. Please verify username and/or password. I dont get locked out so I know it has to be the user name that is incorrect. I tried my email address and I tried domain\username. I am unable to ask my IT people so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
