Earpiece settings?

I have a universal 3.5mm earpiece, that "should" work with the droid X. However, when I put them in, and try to listen to my phone, the sound still comes out the external speakers.

I'm thinking that maybe there is a setting somewhere that I need to change to have the earpiece work, but I haven't been able to find it. Or do I need to try different earphones.

I should add, this isn't a talking earpiece to use with the actual phone, just to listen to Pandora or Last.fm or podcasts with.
