Droid Inspire keyboard smiles not the same as IM smilies

I was wondering if there is a way to either change my keyboard or to change my "messages" smilies. On my keyboard, there is a set of smilies on the 2nd "12#" or numerical keyboard inputs. For example, there are :'), etc. However, my IMs in "messages" requires ;-) and :'-).

Is there a fix for this?

I'm not certain but I don't think so. Check out one of the other text apps like handcent or chomp. They are in the Market.
