Droid 2 nandroid backup question

Hello friends, I had a question for anyone who has done a nandroid RESTORE on a Droid 2. Is it necessary to do a wipe data/cache before restoring a backup like one does before flashing a ROM? I have read conflicting answers on the subject so any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
