there isnt really "learning to root" you just follow some instructions and it is done in 5 minutes. you don't need any training or any skills and you cannot use anything you learn later in life.
those that have rooted:
1. wanted to root
2. followed the simple instructions provided by someone that knew what they were doing
3. were successful in following the instructions
Thats one reason for rooting, yes. BUT the DX has an encrypted bootloader (as will the D2). That encryption has yet to be broken and prevents anything not signed by Motorola from running on the phone (as part of the boot process I mean... obviously apps aren't part of this), meaning... no custom ROMs on the DX. However, you can uninstall the crapware apps if you want and I believe overclocking will work though I don't know that for sure.
