DOD considering Android smartphones for the battlefield

In an effort to link all soldiers in the battlefield and expedite all processes that are handled in the field, the Army is looking into using smartphones to do that. They are considering Android, iPhone and others but are leaning more toward Android because of it's open source and the ability for more people to write programs. They even mention soldiers having the ability to make apps on the fly in the field if it is necessary.

I don't know about y'all but this is a good thing in my opinion. It would help the soldier first and foremost. Secondly, it would further the development of our OS and it would also broaden the widespread use of Android devices. Not to mention the amount of money that the DOD would dump into the development of android which would in turn draw more developer's and an even better marketplace for us

100+ views already and no one has anything to say good, bad or indifferent? Wow... Also I tried to post this in Droid news but I don't have the priviledges to do so. In my opinion this is definitely news and good news at that.

The man or committee that votes to allow the use of an open OS on the battlefield should be forced to try and keep it secure and if the good guys in the field can write new apps for it then so can the other team. Not a good idea unless the security issue can be managed. I for one would say "Prove it before you can take it into the field.".

It will go to IPhone because Jobs will brag-up the security. Plus, you wouldn't want soldiers watching porn in the field!
