Do you need root to get a free hotspot?

I'm looking to get a wifi hotspot going on my DX - do you need root to accomplish this?

I know this has likely been gone over a zillion times, I did searches but couldn't find this answer.

Wifi tethering and Wifi hotspot are 2 different things. You need to be rooted for free wifi tethering but you don't need to be rooted to pay Verizon for hotspot!

You could get pda net. You don't need root to use this. There is a trial version for two weeks and then a one time fee to upgrade.

Best to root. Then you can have control over your phone. I am running cm7, and it is twice as responsive as stock was for me. Just my opinion.

In my opinion, root it and enjoy it...I heard that Verizon's mobile hotspot isnt that great even though its the same connection lol but idk

No you don't need to root to get free hotspot/tethering. Go over to the droid3 forums and look for the wireless tether hack. This hack works for multiple motorola devices. Yours' included.
