dcim folder contents mysteriously erased!!

sorry if this issue is getting reposted, but I looked and couldn't find it.
After setting a new wallpaper from the gallery, all the contents of the dcim - camera and camcorder images - were all mysteriously deleted.
•is there a trash bin I should be looking for?
•is there a way to recover them?

Pull the sdcard and see if they're still there reading it on your pc, if you have a reader. But if they gone, most likely can't recover. If that's the case I would reformat the card as it may be fouled in some way.

I'm on a mac. Checked the card on a reader and the folder contents are gone.
I had to replace the phone this morning, is it possible that the files were corrupted when the SD cared was switched?
