Customize Notification Ringtones for Different Applications

Since the 2.2 update, I noticed that I can't set the main Notification ringtone to silent so I can set a notification through Handcent, GMail and Gemini Calendar apps. Is this something that was taken out of the 2.2 update (I could do it in 2.1)? If so, is there a way to fix it? If I use a tone with no sound, it still cuts off the notification I want to play. Any ideas?

dont set the main one to silent, go into each individual app and change the notification tone from there

I can't set the main one to silent. I have set the other app notification tones, but the main ringtone overrides them and either prevents them from playing or stops them in the middle of the tone.
