Custom User-Agent??

I just opened the native messaging app on my Cyanogen ROM Droid and i see an option thst says:

Custom User-Agent
spoof phone as a different model for MMS

drop down menu lists several phone models : iPhone, Nokia N95, BlackBerry 8800, ect..

anyone know what the purpose of this is??

There is a similar option for handscent. In handscent it just changes the settings to make it act like the different devices. For example; the iphone text screen has the bubble texts and mms.
 
this is something different,.. it doesn't change anything appearance wise.. from what i have found so far it has more to do with actually making my phone send mms "like that device would" what this means i have no idea.. but i am very curious as to what this does and why i would want to use it...
