contact question

On my old phone when I would dial the first few numbers of a P# it would bring up a bunch of close #. On my Dinc it acts like the numbers are letters so it doesn't bring up a correct contact list. so what I mean, if I want the number 841-++++ it needs me to always dial the area code to get the number in the quick dial list. If I dial (555) 841- it will bring up the correct numbers.
do I have a setting wrong somewhere??

Instead of the number type in the name of the contact. Android is set up so you don't have to remember the numbers, just the name. It will bring it up find that way.
