confused about rooting

I have looked through tutorials, but was given dead links.

My friend gave me their old droid(a855) and it is not activated(and wont be for a while)or updated to verizons new market and stuff. no apps i download will work. im very new to this and every time i try to go through tutorials to root it or manually update it, i keep getting dead links to the files i need to download. despite assurances, im still wary that my phone will be bricked. can anyone help me?

If you brick a D1 you have serious skills. There is really nothing you can do that will render it completely useless. You would have to purposely flash a faulty boot.img and faulty boot loader to even have a chance of bricking.

So no worries.
