On a square home button? My Edge has the scanner in the current home button scanner, but that button would surely give a better scan rate success ratio.

I mean on having a front-facing use-photo-of-thumb-to-hack-stolen-phone scanner.

Someone actually did that, though I'm not sure if it was an iPhone or not.

Yeah it was a German. He did it using a lifted print and a print from a photograph. It was the iPhone.
