Charge battery w/o phone ?

Is there a charging device that can charge a Droid X battery when it is removed from the phone?

The guy at the Verizon store didn't seem to think so

Oh yeah. There's tons of external battery charging stations. Here's one that i found doing a quick search on amazon:

Most verizon reps aren't very knowledgable about these phones.
