Car Recharging while using GPS phenomena

I found an unusual problem with recharging my Fascinate in my car while using the GPS and Navigation. It either didn't charge or it used power faster than the car would charge it. That happened in my Tundra.

This weekend we took the wife's car and at first it seemed to charge the phone normally so that I thought it was just my Tundra's problem. Then on the return trip, the same non-charging happened. The light indicated it was charging in all cases.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you solve it?

Thanks for any help

With some phones, the power consumption can be more than the charge. I've encountered this a few times, but it is rare with Motorola phones. I encounter this though when I use torque while charging. And overheating issues.
Also, increased temperature also can contribute to slower charge.

I had the same issue. Its not the car nor the charger. As you know probably the biggest drain on our phones is the screen. Turn it on to night mode and you should be fine. Apparently in car cradle mode you only get night mode or day mode (super bright, not sure what percentage) and it overrides whatever display settings. I just tried it coming to work under night mode and it charged while using my Nav. My Tundra Rocks!

Dear Paul,

Thanks for your reply. Just had one question: What is night mode? Hadn't heard that term before. I would guess that the screen is turned down but is there a short cut to night mode?

I am assuming you are using the stock car cradle. In the top right hand corner there is an icon that looks like the sun. If you hit that it toggles between day mode and night mode.

I get the same issue with my og where I'm using it while using the navi and charging... I don't use the car cradle I just have a micro usb car charger. So I just power off the screen since the the voice guidance still works with the screen off. I recommend if you're not using them the bluetooth and screen. Idk what else to do.

Hmmm I never had this issue on my OG droid. In fact I remember that the light sensor on the OG droid adjusted the brightness when I used my navigation but then again that was with the OEM car cradle. That was on a 1k mile trip and no charging issues. One annoying thing was that with some custom Roms it was adjusting too frequently.

using an after market charger/holder. It plugs into the lighter and then a USB cable is run to the phone. I'll try lowering the screen brightness when I'm traveling. Interesting that one time it didn't drain in my wife's car and one time it did. Thanks for your help

If you are using aftermarket holder then are you using the "car cradle" mode? You can manually enter that mode at any time then use the navigation shortcut from there if you like. I can't comment on your aftermarket charger but generally can't see that being too much of a problem. Just keep in mind that the more things that are open could cause more battery drain. Good luck John!
