Cannot log in into gmail

Hi there,
I am sure this has been covered, I have used the search option BUT no luck.

I used the standard gmail when setting up my phone (razr).
I changed my passwords in my gmail accounts a few days back and I can log in online (2 accounts).

My kid 7 year old was playing with my phone login screen and now I cannot access my phone???
phone is locked "Too may unlock attempts" BUT I know my password for my email accounts are correct as I can log in.

Sorry if this is a dumb question as I am not very phone/computer literate.

just got off the phone with Motorola & my service provider & they say the phone needs to be RESET, I cannot do that as I have very important TXTon it.

is a factory reset the only way??
