Cannot Format SD Card

I want to format my SD card. I've gone into settings > SD Card & Phone Storage > Unmount SD Card > but then the Format SD Card option will not light up for me to hit. Suggestions?

Resetting the phone itself to factory defaults allowed me to then format the sd card.

When you unmount the sd card the phone's os has no control over the sd card unless and until you once again mount the sd card for use. When you restored to factory defaults the phone once again mounted the card for use. You can also plug a usb cord into the phone and your computer and edit the card like an external storage device.
