Can you open a pdf file without a sd card?

Ok, either someone stole my sd card or I lost it while I was partying too hard and I haven't bought a new one yet but need to open a pdf file. Is it possible to open the file in cache instead of saving it to the card? I thought I read somewhere that you can open up to a certain size of file without having to save it to a card, if so then is it possible to raise the limit. I can get root access if needed. You could signup for a free account on one of the cloud file services like Dropbox and then use one of many available apps to access it. You'd only have it when you have 3G or WiFi connectivity, but that's better than nothing.
