BT handsfree issues

looking for apps or work arounds to allow me to initiate BT calls handsfree

Depends on what you're referring to by 'initiate.' If your just looking for 'last call redial' most headsets should work (all three of mine do, or did, haven't checked with the latest ROM I put on). If your referring to Voice-dialing via the BT than it's a waste of time. The OS lacks the feature. The only 'work-around' is to use a BT headset that has voice dialing enabled from/on the headset itself. Some BlueAnts can and a few other 'high-end' headsets.
