Those of us who never owned a blackberry do not have a bbm id and really that is what you need to get going forward. You can either wait for them to create one for you or do it yourself. Those of us wanting to bypass the waiting process just go here: https://blackberryid.blackberry.com/bbid/registration/registration_eula.seam
and sign up for a bb id. Once you are registered you will be able to use the app.
Is there a technologically superior reason to use Blackberry Messenger over the dozens of other IM clients out these days? Or is this just for those who have friends that still have Blackberry devices?

Personally i do not know as i never used it. I'm trying to check it out now. But since none of my friends use it i have to wait before i can try it out.
One thing that is nice about BBM is that it notifies you when your message has been read, and it also lets you know when the person you are chatting with is typing a message back. This is similar to what Google offers in the Hangouts.
Not sure if this matters or not but yesterday i entered the email i wanted to use when i tried to use the bbm app. So not sure if that made a difference when i set up my bb id today.
I loved BBM as a former Blackberry user from pre-2009 when I went Android. It was the only regret I had actually was losing BBM. Anyway, I just created an account online, but doubt it can be accessed from my S3. I signed in online but see no way to add anyone.
finally got a hold of someone to test it. Eh I say it may have gotten a lot of hype early but just as stated a little too late. With the only good thing I can see from it is the cross platform but sms and now hangout is fulfilling that. I feel like blackberry sat on this thing. It is obvious they are trying one last ditch effort to remain relevant but they have failed yet again in my opinion. Between the hassle it takes to add people and the lack of features I do not see it competing with what is out now. Be interested to hear your opinions.
True but hangout you do not have to give out phone numbers as well. I think back in the day that may have been a big plus but now it is long in the tooth.
