How does one backup the entire phone so no data is lost if phone is lost, stolen, crushed etc.... Is there software for this or what is the process?

Google will back up most everything for you. Your apps you just reinstall from the market place but if you want you can back them up with Astro or download MyBackUp.

For added protection take a look at Mobil Defense. That will allow you to shut your phone down completely if it's lost or stolen.
