It was launched on the off-chance that you might want to use them. However, they are only taking up memory, not processor and not battery and will be one of the first ones closed when the system needs memory (since you're not using them). However, if you do close them, they will take up battery and processor power just to get themselves into memory. The phone is unlike everything else we're used to in the computing world and having empty memory is a bad thing (since the OS will keep loading more apps into that blank spot to try and make sure that the apps you will want to use are available to be loaded from memory rather than from disk).
