Last week California Judge Lucy Koh told Samsung and Apple that they would have to drop some of their patent claims in order to keep their proposed July 30th trial date. It seems that both companies listened and have filed motions to do just that. Late Monday night Apple made a filing in its California litigation that reduced their claims by roughly half and Samsung soon followed offering to drop five of their twelve claims. It is worth noting that both Apple and Samsung are free to bring up the dropped disputes in later trials.
Despite the reduced claims both companies are still very much at odds, with Apple claiming that Samsung is a "copycat" and stating that "we just want people to invent their own stuff" while Samsung maintains that Apple is simply "trying to compete through litigation".
