So I've run in recovery, installed the update.zip file from the SD card now I'm trying to run the updater and it gives me the black screen. I have hit "Wait" 4 times now. How much longer do I wait? Do I force close and try to run again? Do I need to run it from the VERY beginning (i.e. from the update in recovery mode?)

Couple more nooby observations:

In Sholes's 2.1 I can't access my lowest rung of apps in the pull out app tab when in horizontal position. Actually the horizontal position of the app tab is a bit... off seeming, is this how it should be?

Also, are any of the wallpapers capable of animation similar to official 2.1?

Finally got it installed. Now this is going to sound like a stretch, but how might I go about getting the bugless beast, and or a black notification bar at the top?

quick question. My GPS is not working i rebooted phone 3 times. Anyway else have this problem?

Make sure GPS is enabled, go to Settings/Location & security/Use GPS satellites. (check mark the box) hope this helps

Unfortunately I have tried that. It is enabled still no luck

Try to launch GPS outdoors see if it works, for instance in my house GPS dosent work cause of the steel structure.
Give it a shot and let us know

You can charge in USB on your phone bring the drop menu down that shows the USB icon change the settings. I forgot exactly which one it was but I had the same problem

I have never heard of that, but I recommend going back to stock if you don't figure it out soon. Grab the virgin-oem nandroid backup, or the stock update.zip and flash it. If that fixes the problem, let us know -- and charge your battery to 100% before trying again.

[edit] Sounds like the new USB gadget could be the culprit. Does it charge off of AC?

to be honest, the horizontal position app tab in 2.1 mode is quite buggy. Pressing the home button engages apps that aren't visually present, in order to return to home, home icon button must be pushed...

Yes; use the USB gadget in the notification bar.

To manage all USB connections you use the notification bar that has the USB icon. Drop it down and click on the connection. There is setting within that

Camel, i rebooted and then set USB to "NONE" and it's charging now....I will test out more scenarios when i get home...Thanks for you input...
