What is the best app killer? Are they necessary? Please enlighten me.

No, it's not recommended to use them on Android 2.2+.

Get rid of them, they cause more trouble than anything.

In addition to the links above there are countless threads on this very topic and many guides out on the internet that you can refer to as well. They shouldn't be necessary as you don't need to kill an app unless it is misbehaving. Properly coded apps shouldn't be a problem. Even so, you can force stop without a task killer.
