Anyone considering the Droid 2 now?

Could care less about any of that crap....yall crack me up im not buying a phone cause i cant root it lol

What is so funny about that stance? Not spending money on something you can't own and do with as you see fit? How about I charge you $150 per month for unlimited bandwith to the internet but then stipulate you can only go online from the 3:30am to 3:45am your local time? Would that make you laugh or would you not purchase my internet service in favor of one that allows you to go online whenever YOU want but only offers 20 mbps down speed for the same price?

i think its a little different because you dont pay verizon for the unlocked bootloader, you pay for the service (make calls, text, etc). when you buy the phone you buy it as is, not what it might do someday. like a car, you have a warranty but if you alter it they can void your warranty. you dont go buy a prius on the hopes your gonna make it a drag car.

key words right there. when YOU BUY the phone. you bought it, its yours, you should be able to do as you please. it's the same as car manufacturers building a car that doesnt allow you to put custom wheels on it. sure, there are some that could care less, its just a car. but there will be a small group that does care, thats us in the droid world.

You still pay for the phone $199 plus higher service costs to cover the providers' subsidy of the handset. If I void the warranty so be it. It is mine to void if I so choose. I make that decision on my own and accept the responsibility of that decision. If they want me to sign a warranty waiver so be it, I will. Just let me do with MY phone what I want to not what someone else deems appropriate use.

i'm definitely considering the Motorola Droid 2 and it won't matter if I can't root it. I think it will be a fine stand alone phone just like the Droid was when it first came out and wasn't rooted.

You know what, these are my exact thoughts on the DX. I feel the reaction to the inability to currently root the DX to be completely overblown.

You have to think, the majority of people that go to a web forum to discuss a phone is wanting to get more out of it then just the stock experience. You will always see more people complaining about not being able to hack their phone here but what people don't realize is that we are the minority and the majority couldn't care less.

There may be some good news on the X's locked bootloader, so let's all give it some time and see what happens before rushing to judgement.

With eFuse and 1024 bit encryption the ONLY way would be for the private keys to be leaked. Otherwise you will never see a custom ROM or Kernel. To top it off because of eFuse the likelihood that root can be obtained has also come into question.

I don't know details, just that there is some good news on the X front and that it is bigger than root access.

Unless they pay me to get the phone and then write off my trip to the store as a tax deduction there is no news other than unencrypted boot loader and root OR "private keys leaked hack away" that would sway me.

Exactly! its my phone i want to do what ever i want to it... and people who think this is not a big deal dont understand. that the whole point of android is openness... we let them lock the bootloader then next thing you know they will try to take another feature away.. At&T already keeps there android phones from installing apps that arnt in the market place. We continue to allow this by buying phones with these handicaps andd android is going to head in the wrong direction... I will not buy a android phone with any handicaps and with so many phone options there is no need 2.

Congrats

Curious if anyone is debating between the Droid 2 and the Droid X now that there is a little more info about the Droid 2.

I am AT&T iPhone user but I am making the switch to the Verizon. I haven't used either Droid so I'll know more after I play around with them. But, I was wondering if there is anything in the Droid 2 that might make some of you wait til August to decide?

First, congrats on planning on moving to Android. It will be a change, but given some time to get used to the phone, you'll like it!

I'd like to go with the Droid 2 as long as they don't lock the bootlogger. I like to customize my phone, so the Droid X is out for me.

I agree with the sentiment that.... If I'm going to pay for a phone, I want to do with it as I please.

I accept the rules/terms in place with warranty etc.... but I will make the decision what to do along those lines myself.

Really?

Good Lord I hope so!

On the locked bootlogger issue:
I'm with the others. If I void my warranty, that is *my* prerogative. If I do and I screw it up, I'll spend my money for the new one, not try to scam them into giving me a new one. (Although I'm sure some unscrupulous people might) I've tweaked a few phones now and never once bricked it. There was always a way to fix any minor issues with them.

However, I don't try to overclock mine to hit 2 GHz either. :)
