Any way to reduce the size of "System data"?

I am trying to free up space on my Droid 1, viewing the app storage on the phone with the DiskUsage app. It shows only 48.7 MiB of free space left and I am getting frustrated with slow response time and having no icons coming back to the desktop for some time after an app close.

I have uninstalled some apps that were not being used, but it seems to me the "System data" section shows 44.9 MiB used and I thought it was originally less than that. Is there any way to clean it out and reduce it's size?

(I know I should just root the phone and move everything to the SD card, but I have been putting that off.)

Really the only ways to get that system data down are to root. Since you can't touch system info without root access.
