Angry Birds 2 Hits the Google Play Store Overloaded with In-App Purchases

Fans of the Angry Birds series might be pleased to know that the true sequel, Angry Birds 2 is now available on the Google Play Store. Sadly, in may not be all good news, even if you are a fan. Apparently, the new version of Angry Birds is laced within even more in-app purchases than the previous versions (or at least that's the current perception).

Here's a brief description of how it works now: With Angry Birds 2, you now only have a maximum of three lives. If you run out of cards, you have to either spend gems (won in game) to continue or you will lose a life. Lives do regenerate in 30 minutes, but you can recharge for 60 gems. To put it in perspective, you get 80 gems for $1. Obviously you can buy even larger bundles of gems for quite a bit more money.

The main complaint is that this is makes it annoying to simply restart a level when you believe you've made a big mistake and still won't be able to beat it. If these complaints don't bother you, and you love the same gameplay formula as the original, then you will probably enjoy Angry Birds 2. I downloaded it on lunch and tried the first few levels. I knew there were IAPs, but didn't realize it was on the timer system like many of their other games.

Yet another example of why I HATE the freemium model. I'll likely uninstall it the first time I come up on not having lives. That, or put it down and not uninstall it until an update comes to remind me that I forgot to get rid of it.

As I (and many others here) have said, I'd much rather toss a developer a few bucks and just play the game. I'm sure there's money to be made using the freemium model, but I get sick and tired of being nickel and dimed and I like to save my Opinion Rewards money for books or other things that don't disappear once I spend through them just to play a couple more levels.

This explains the article I was skimming earlier where someone fairly high up at Rovio said something about how they'd been progressing with free-to-play games and it's culminated in this.

If you want to limit my time playing your "free" game to try and squeeze money out of me, I'll got play something else. Thanks.

these timer systems are supposed to what? prevent you from playing all day or line developers pockets with money by making you pay to play.

absolute garbage, whatever morons designed this system needs to be slapped

They're designed to get you hooked & make you wanna pay to keep playing all day rather than go have a life & come back.

I play em, but once that cheap quick joy dies down, I uninstall. I'd get more joy if they didn't do everything in your power to try & get you to spend money. "Is this taking too long? Give us money & you don't have to wait." Next game, please.

I'm the same exact way unless it is a fandom or game that I really like. I still play Family Guy Quest for Stuff every once in a while

That's one that I uninstalled. Haha!

This one (AB2) is getting ready to get the boot as well already. First of all, I shouldn't be penalized in a TUTORIAL level. Had one where I followed their lines learning to use a new bird and it didn't destroy part of the Piggies fort that was really only accessible by that particular bird and that should've come down with the rest of it. So, I wasted my other birds trying to figure out a way to finish it off and I had to use my 60 gems that they gave me for free to try again. Got it on the first try the next time, but they made me waste my gems for following what they told me to do in the tutorial. Lame.

And they've left no room for error or guess and check. On the older games, you could try more than once on a level right away to learn from your mistakes. Here, if you've spent your measly free gems and don't succeed, you're screwed and have to wait to try again later (after you've forgotten your misstep, if you were able to figure it out) unless you wanna pay, which I'm not doing.

maybe we all rate it 1 star.... and get a coalition of people together to taste it 1 star and complain about these types of games..... then we #occupygoogleplay and force developers to stop doing this stuff with games.

ok maybe I went a little far but if we get enough people who hate this together we can potentially change something.

I think @Macktion had a thread about this subject at one point. Can't remember if he was trying to start the revolution or someone else jumped in and tried based on his OP.

Sadly, there's little to no chance of getting enough people to make it work. Obviously these companies are making plenty of money off of this model, or they would've already abandoned it. Which means that there are a lot of people out there willing to pay for these "free-to-play" games.

With that said, here's what I wrote to go along with my 1 star.

I lost birds on a TUTORIAL level. Follow the guide & not all pigs went down. Lost birds & had to spend the pathetic amount of gems I was given at the start to continue a TUTORIAL. Garbage. I'd have been happy to pay some money for this game up front rather than being nickel and dimed. Instead, you'll get no money from me. Can't play more than one level in a sitting if you mess up without lining the dev's pockets. How about creating content worth paying for instead of charging for every little thing?

I might be confused though. There are lives...Does it only cost me gems for new cards while still in a level? Can I use these lives? That might make it suck a TINY bit less...

Haha
