Am i the only person who doesn't think it's worth it?

I have nothing against rooting, it's just unlocking the phones' full potential to me.

However, i am more than happy with my stock Droid. I came from an AT&T Tilt so this is already a significant upgrade.

The only thing not stock about my Droid is 2.1 launcher, through an .apk file and the 2.1 clock.

I am definitely happy with my setup and the speed of this thing already.

Yeah but imagine it even faster....:icon_ devil:

I just caught the OP's question.
It seems like root/ overclock people are really phone hackers.
is that true?

No. Some are high school kids. Some are folks in their teens and some are over 50. From the threads I've read some are not technical gurus. Some aren't even on this forum and stumble across the app in the store and just click away. Some are indeed hackers or computer gurus or very curious people. Others follow the root instructions, jump up and down telling the world they rooted their phone and then come back here and ask "I'm rooted, what next?" The majority can follow instructions but I bet very few could have figured this out by themselves. Once figured out it isn't rocket science though.

we already have an amazing phone.
i don't think the risk of voiding the warranty is worth rooting overclocking.
I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but i'm not riding the short bus either- i guess i'm in the middle intellectually.
i think it's a matter of risk.

Don't do it then. It really is that simple.

Every day we see these posts.. "convince me" or "its not worth it"..

Well, simply put, don't bother.

I agree that we see these posts everyday and everyday its the same thing 'Do I or Don't I'. IMO I don't see any reason not to do it. If you follow the steps outlined in so many guides and or use the sholes mod you should have no problem at all. And if you do have a problem you can ask for help on the forums. If you can't get it to work, you simply go back to unroot.

I really don't see anything wrong with a person that paid upwards of $300 wanting to get the most out of their phone. If that means overclocking then so be it. Rooting in and of itself is no big deal.

In all honesty, why should I convince someone else to do something that makes their phone better?

Would I ask someone else "convince me to start working out", or "convince me to invest my money". No, I wouldn't ask that. Its the same thing, people say "convince me" and after a while my response has become "no, I won't".

If you don't want to do it, don't. But don't sit here and ask me to tell you why you should do something that will benefit you. If you like the stock, then good.. but don't waste my time.

In the end, we'll get the "OMG I BRICKED MY PHONE" post (which only 1 person has done, I think) and then we'll see the "I went back to stock to get 2.1" post.

I'm basically a geek, and want to simultaneously get the most out of my gadgets and learn how they actually work. It's a time commitment if you actually want to do the research you should, and not worth it for many. Which is fine...this is a solid product that doesn't need tweaking to be functional.

'hack' is an odd and possibly inaccurate word in this context, with too many script kiddy connotations. That being said, it didn't stop me from gleefully and ironically announcing to my husband that I'd just hacked my phone...:icon_ devil:

exactly, I paid good money for this phone and I want it to be 100% mine, tweaking things is so addictive. Again, not trying to convince anyone, but rooting and such is really way easier than it sounds. If you read the guides that christim linked, you see that its really fool proof. The only way to really mess up is if you type the wrong letters or something. The simple fix is to proof read. And with the sholes updater, things seem to be even easier (though I've never used it). But if you're happy thats great. But the odds of you messing up your phone beyond repair are almost non existent. I could never go back to stock or 550mhz. Just remember...

Do or do not, there is no try.

Yeah I love to learn how my Droid operates and what allows it to do this or that or whatever it may be....I just love learning about it! :)

It's so neat and I love helping other people with this stuff...you know why??

Because I love to know that I am helping others get the MOST out of this awesome device...

No you are not alone. I came from a feature phone (Samsung Impression). The Droid is my very first Smart phone and is leaps and bounds over what I am used to. I still get a kick out of all the things I can do, how much I can customize and how much faster it is. And this is in it's stock form. I am pretty tech savvy and have always built and tinkered with my own computers. I am also a long time Harley owner and you know we can leave anything stock. But in all honesty I am quite happy with the Droid the way it is. Will I still have the same opinion in a year??? Dunno. But for now it does what I need as fast as I need it to. And I can make it look like I want too.

Some are even over sixty. Of course they probably also drive sports cars and motorcycles. Why don't people have more common sense.

Wait, I represent those remarks.

It's a hobby for all ages. Learning and discovering is great!
