I seem to have inconsistent behavior when I take the phone away from my ear i.e. the screen does not always turn back on and this is a real pain when it comes to ending calls. is this a known issue?

Maybe someone could make an app that when a phone call is being made the screen stays idle and on anyway.

try turning off auto-dimming...that seems to have been helping people

the accelorometer doesn't have anthing to do with it though. The proximity sensor is what turns it on and off...you will find it in the upper right hand corner of the device

This and placement of the hand. Make sure you are not covering that corner up.

Easy fix to the problem is to hit the power button when you pull the phone away from your ear and then it gives you the unlock screen, once you unlock it it will return to your phone screen so you can end a call or accept another. I myself find this to be a great feature cuz I don't have to worry about hitting any keys with my face while in a call.
