How do I know if my phone is in 3g or 4g mode?

At the top in the middle. It says 3G or 4G LTE.

All I have is a symbol that I assume means 4g.

Thanks for the screen shot. I assume I am not in a 4g area but once I disabled my WiFi I saw the 3gs.
