youmail set up problem

I have the motorola droid and wanted to get youmail and all a caller hears is to enter the 10 digit number. I don't have my land line forwarded or anything. I saw a thread similar to this and tried those suggestions and nothing worked. Any suggestions as to how to get this working as I have heard good things about youmail.
