When Using Google Hangouts (for texts)-how to prevent it from counting against limits

If I have unlimited data, I thought Hangouts would send texts using data and not count against text limits. In the app My Verizon, every time I send or receive a text, the count continues to climb.

I must not understand how to configure some setting.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, that's never been the case.

I think the only way you can send texts and not have it count against your texting plan is to setup a Google Voice number, which is free and can be used with hangouts.

I have a Google voice number when it first became available.I will have to dig up that info.
