In 1998/1999 Tom Clancy wrote and released the Net Force book series. It was actually pretty good. There was also a Net Force movie starring Scott Bakula. The movie was completely different from the book but it was still good.
In both the movie and books every Net Force operator had a VIRGIL.. Today's smartphone has just about every feature the VIRGIL had.
Sometimes it is amazing how authors like Tom Clancy can create futuristic devices for their stories that eventually becomes common place in the real world.
