"The carrier announced it recently tested a drone-based "flying cell-site" system for expanded air network coverage in emergency situations when power grids are knocked out."
Verizon tests 4G LTE coverage drones for extreme weather conditions

That's pretty clever! We had a massive power outage in metro Detroit a month ago that lasted several days so even though phone service was mostly uninterrupted, we did lose a TMobile tower that supplied service to about a square mile leaving us reliant on wifi for communication.

Would a balloon give more consistent coverage with longer time on station?

Drones can fly for 30+ hours. Deploy a new one when the first one is RTB. Seems plausible.

They should also use them during sporting events or concerts when NOBODY has a signal.
