Sharp just announced a new display for mobile smartphones that sets the bar ludicrously high. Sharp's new 5.5-inch IGZO display will sport a 3,840 x 2,160 UHD (4K) resolution display that pushed out an astounding 806 pixels per inch! While it is debatable whether this level of detail on a tiny little smartphone display will actually ever be perceived by the human eye, it's great to see a company pushing the envelope.

In fact, there are hints that Sharp has some even crazier tech on the horizon which will be an 8K (4320 x 7680) resolution smartphone display! To reiterate, for now, this tech doesn't really offer much value, but these are baby steps on the march toward VR headset displays that can actually take advantage of that insanely high resolution.

Of course, display tech seems to be outpacing battery tech by a large margin. What good is a "crazy-rez" display if you can't power it for more than a few hours?

If it doesn't kill battery life, go for it but it will never be noticible with the naked eye so IMO, its unnecessary. Put that on tablets if anything.

Sharp just poked the entire display industry in the eye with a very "Sharp" stick....lol I'm for anything that pushes the tech envelope.

Yeah.. I can't see this being very efficient.. They'll need a 4500Mah battery or bigger in this thing.. But you'll have to plug it in just to watch videos.. And play games.
