No.

You can back them up to SD card with Astro File Manager. But you can't install them to the SD.

If I save all of my apps to astro am I able to easily access them via astro? If that's the case I will save all of my apps to astro and erase them to free up space on my internal memory. Will that work?

are you rooted? if so, you can run native apps2sd in a froyo rom, and in most of the 2.1 roms there's a hack that will allow apps2sd included, but with stock eris there is no way to do this.
