I'm pretty sure z4root isn't compatible with 2.2.1, I would give you a link to an alternate method but I'm on my phone

My DX is awesome rooted with Z4. Running with Liberty. And yea 2.2.1, and yea you can use the market the same. In fact you. MUST get some apps ASAP before you do anything with root. I rooted last month, and read up on forums for hours to be sure I didn't screw anything up.
Move the .apk file to your dx root menu.

And you can always unroot. Z4 gives you that option. RELAX! But research.

you can grab z4 here, download it with the browser on the DX, when it finishes drag the notification bar down and click on z4 to install. Once installed go to menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging>check on, then reboot, then open z4 and click permanent root, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes, if it does reboot and run it again. It works for 2.2 and 2.2.1 on the DX

I'm really new to this stuff and these terms. But all of this info is in the forums. Every bit. Also search for z4 and root on Droid Life for some easy quick info to steer you in the right direction.

You'll want Titanium or somesuch to backup your apps. And clockwork bootstrapper at least. After you root that is. CYA!!!!!

Use superoneclick there are not apps you HAVE to have. To take advantage of being rooted setcpu is recommended if you want to install custom software rom manager. If you don't have a clue what you are doing I suggest you google everything do research and always make a backup of your current set up before installing or as we call it flashing.
