I'm pretty sure z4root isn't compatible with 2.2.1, I would give you a link to an alternate method but I'm on my phone

My DX is awesome rooted with Z4. Running with Liberty. And yea 2.2.1, and yea you can use the market the same. In fact you. MUST get some apps ASAP before you do anything with root. I rooted last month, and read up on forums for hours to be sure I didn't screw anything up.
Move the .apk file to your dx root menu.

And you can always unroot. Z4 gives you that option. RELAX! But research.

you can grab z4 here, download it with the browser on the DX, when it finishes drag the notification bar down and click on z4 to install. Once installed go to menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging>check on, then reboot, then open z4 and click permanent root, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes, if it does reboot and run it again. It works for 2.2 and 2.2.1 on the DX
