Is there anyway for a Droid to read RFID tags? I assume not, but then I guess the next question is why not? This would be tremendously useful in the manufacturing world.
Passing thought: could RFID work via another device on the USB port?

Do you have an RFID chip implanted in your arm?

;)

But no, personally, I know of none.

For the Droid to read an RFID chip, it would need to have the hardware to do so and it does not. Would work well for many things. Hopefully they implement that more in new phones.

How does the Droid metal detector application work? Is that gross detection, and the sensor could not read the difference in the magnetic signature of various tags?

USB would be one way of implementing RFID, another would be via SIM or SD Card. Another would be to put a popular RFID standard like DASH7 (Home | dash7.org) on an existing piece of silicon currently occupied by NFC or Bluetooth. Many of these options will be real in the first half of 2010.
