Removing an app when directions don't work

I followed the directions (in managing applications) to remove an app (City ID) and the uninstall is greyed out. Any ideas? Also, I put an app on my home screen accidentally, and now I can't figure out how to get rid of it there (not the app, just its presence on my home screen). T H A N K Y O U !!!!!!

You can't remove stock Verizon apps like city id. Sorry.

Oh long press the app you don't want on the home screen and then drag to the garbage can.
