Looking for remote storage

I'm trying to find the remote storage in files on my bionic so I can root it in vm running linux minimal. All I can locate under the file manager is internal phone storage, sd card and shared folders. I have looked in the sub folders of each with no luck. Any help woud be appreciated, I want this thing rock & rollin which is not possible running2.3.4 .
I rooted both my tablets with no problem but this is my first moto bionic and it seems quite different.

I'm trying to find a good / safe way to root my bionic XT875. It's running Android 2.3.4 Build 5.5.184 DBN 74. Any help would be appreciated.
